Junior Miners/ Exploration Companies- Here’s where I believe the real value in gold stock investing lies. Juniors classify as exploration and early-stage production companies. These are the micro-cap stocks of the gold world. 50%, 100%, 300%, and even 1000% returns occur frequently in this sector. However, there’s a catch. Maybe only one of every 100 junior miners or exploration companies will present opportunities to generate massive gains. In order to properly invest in this area, you must possess ample experience in the gold mining sector, ability to research and analyze drilling results, select companies with competent management, and know all the ins and outs of these companies. It’s no easy task to hand select only the top gold and silver stocks poised to deliver ample shareholder value. Thankfully, I believe I’ve found THE world’s top gold stock expert. His track record boasts over a 239% return in 2009 and a 173% return in 2010 on the overall portfolio. He and his team work around the clock to find and deliver only the top gold mining companies to his subscribers. I’ve read and subscribed to many newsletters, and this one is the only newsletter worth reading in terms of shareholder value delivered to the portfolio. Warren Buffet has never been a huge fan of Gold. In fact, he believes it is being used for destructive purposes. Read our Warren buffet derivatives still weapons mass destruction article.
If you're considering a gold IRA, consult a financial advisor to determine how the metal would fit with the overall goals of your portfolio. In general, it's never a good idea to put all of your eggs in one asset basket. If gold seems like a solid choice for you, Sentell suggests putting no more than one-third of your retirement funds into a gold IRA.
You will know which company you can trust to take your IRA and buy gold at the best price and ensure that you are getting the gold you want. You will also learn about the process and what you need to know to make the best decision about how to turn your IRA into a solid investment plan that will always be easily liquidated and accessible. You will also be constantly aware of the value of your IRA no matter what the stock market or current inflation rates are.
However, people still love the yellow metal. Clearly, a big part of demand comes from the jewelry industry -- we all like nice baubles and trinkets. But a notable amount of demand comes from entities that want to own gold in its physical form via coins, bullion, and bars. That stems largely from the economic history of gold and the resulting view of the metal as a safe-haven investment. If paper money were to suddenly become worthless, the world would have to fall back on something of value to facilitate trade. One of the most logical options is gold, since that was the role it played before fiat currencies ruled the day. This is one of the reasons that investors tend to push up the price of gold when financial markets are volatile.
Research done by Trinity College found that gold is the best hedge against a potential stock market crash. For 15 days after a crash, gold prices increased dramatically. Frightened investors panicked, sold their stocks and bought gold. After that, gold prices lost value against rebounding stock prices. Investors moved money back into stocks to take advantage of their lower prices. Those who held onto gold past the 15 days began losing money.
As a result of a Gold IRA rollover has become such a popular topic, a variety of unscrupulous scammers have appeared promoting “home storage” IRA’s. The ads appear to make it clear, that it’s a simple process to establish a home storage IRA, providing immediate access to your precious metals account and avoiding custodial and depository fees, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Once you have decided on the quantity of gold bullion to purchase, your Monex Account Representative will assist you in executing your order over the phone. Your purchase and price will be confirmed on a voice recorded line after your acknowledgment, and a written confirmation will be sent to you with the details of your order. Payment may be made after you order, but must be initiated on the day of purchase, which means you must mail or wire funds on the day of your purchase. You can have your metal (a) shipped to your home; (b) made available for pick-up at over 30 facilities across the U.S. and Canada; or (c) have your metal delivered to a bank/depository for storage.
The most traditional way of investing in gold is by buying bullion gold bars. In some countries, like Canada, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, these can easily be bought or sold at the major banks. Alternatively, there are bullion dealers that provide the same service. Bars are available in various sizes. For example, in Europe, Good Delivery bars are approximately 400 troy ounces (12 kg). 1 kilogram (32 ozt) are also popular, although many other weights exist, such as the 10oz, 1oz, 10 g, 100 g, 1 kg, 1 Tael, and 1 Tola.

Big Gold Producers- Names like Goldcorp Inc (GG), Barrick Gold Corp (ABX), Newmont Mining Corp (NEM), Agnico Eagle Mines LTD (AEM) and a few others come to mind in this category. Large gold producers are the “brand names” of gold stocks and many of them have seen substantial run-ups in the last decade of the bull run. As with the ETFs & Mutual funds, I’m not a big fan.
One approach to deciding how much of a diversified portfolio should be allocated to gold is to measure the percentage of worldwide financial assets that bullion represents. According to the World Gold Council, the total value of all the gold that has ever been mined is around $7.5 trillion. That’s about 4% of the combined value of the global stock, bond and gold markets.
There are two main reasons people buy gold: as insurance and as an investment. People who are concerned about the recent economic crisis tend to view their ownership of precious metals as an insurance investment. As long as you have physical gold or silver to sell or trade, you will never be broke, even if the economy collapses. As nationally recognized gold expert, long-time investor and author of “Stack Silver Get Gold: How to Buy Gold and Silver Bullion Without Getting Ripped Off!” Hunter Riley III told me, one of the main things gold bullion has going for it is that it’s a tangible asset you maintain control of, no matter what happens to the global economy.
Gold IRAs can either be traditional or Roth IRAs. The first thing that a potential investor must decide is whether they want to invest in the actual physical gold or in gold company stock, a gold mutual fund, or an exchange-traded gold fund. If the investor decides to invest in the actual gold, it must be gold coins or bullion that meets the standards of the IRS regarding purity. The gold must be held by a custodian that is IRS-approved and should not be held in any type of home storage.
Gold bullion must be purchased from dealers, who often add premiums to their prices. It must be stored, safeguarded and insured, creating additional costs. Since gold bullion is a commodity, its value is in its rarity, with prices fluctuating by supply and demand rules. The mining companies backing up gold stocks also have operating costs for personnel, equipment and all phases of finding, digging and transporting gold. Should these operating costs, such as the cost of fuel, rise, their profitability declines, as with any corporation facing such increases. Their stock values depend on company profitability and projections of future successes.
The process of opening one of these accounts is fairly straightforward. First things first, you’ll need to find a custodian. Because it’s illegal for you to keep the gold yourself, you need a custodian to hold the gold you purchase through your IRA. You can find one by contacting a nearby bank, credit union or trust company. Make sure to do your research and find a company that has a strong track record of well-performing gold IRAs.

Rather than being miners, they are more like specialty finance companies that get paid in precious metals. The low prices they pay help to lock in wide margins regardless of the price of gold, and their investment approaches all result in wider mine diversification than you would likely get from owning a single miner. And all three of these companies have reliably paid dividends for years, which can help investors to stick around through the entire commodity cycle to achieve the full diversification benefit gold can offer. Streaming companies are probably the best all-around option if you are looking to buy gold, providing diversification, direct exposure to gold, and upside potential from the gold projects they back.
Much of the supply of gold in the market since the 1990s has come from sales of gold bullion from the vaults of global central banks. This selling by global central banks slowed greatly in 2008. At the same time, production of new gold from mines had been declining since 2000. According to BullionVault.com, annual gold-mining output fell from 2,573 metric tons in 2000 to 2,444 metric tons in 2007 (however, according to Goldsheetlinks.com, gold saw a rebound in production with output hitting nearly 2,700 metric tons in 2011.) It can take from five to 10 years to bring a new mine into production. As a general rule, reduction in the supply of gold increases gold prices.
If you are buying gold coins in the U.S., chances are good that you will see American Gold Eagle coins for sale. These gold coins are produced by the U.S. Mint, and are one of the world’s most popular gold bullion coins. One of the nicest things about American Gold Eagle coins is that they are available in numerous weights such as 1/10th ounce, ¼ ounce, ½ ounce and 1 ounce.
One alternative to a direct purchase of gold bullion is to invest in one of the gold-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Each share of these specialized instruments represents a fixed amount of gold, such as one-tenth of an ounce. These funds may be purchased or sold just like stocks, in any brokerage or IRA account. This method is therefore easier and more cost-effective than owning bars or coins directly, especially for small investors, as the minimum investment is only the price of a single share of the ETF. The annual expense ratios of these funds are often less than 0.5%, much less than the fees and expenses on many other investments, including most mutual funds.
Market timing is difficult for any investment. That is one reason many investors look beyond day-to-day price movements and buy physical Gold or Silver as long-term investments. When planning to hold an asset like physical Gold for 3-5 years or more, it is less important to consider the current cost of the metal and more important to examine its historical performance in relation to other investments.
At the center of everything we do is a strong commitment to independent research and sharing its profitable discoveries with investors. This dedication to giving investors a trading advantage led to the creation of our proven Zacks Rank stock-rating system. Since 1986 it has nearly tripled the S&P 500 with an average gain of +26% per year. These returns cover a period from 1986-2011 and were examined and attested by Baker Tilly, an independent accounting firm.
The reason gold benefits from a declining U.S. dollar is because gold is priced in U.S. dollars globally. There are two reasons for this relationship. First, investors who are looking at buying gold (i.e., central banks) must sell their U.S. dollars to make this transaction. This ultimately drives the U.S. dollar lower as global investors seek to diversify out of the dollar. The second reason has to do with the fact that a weakening dollar makes gold cheaper for investors who hold other currencies. This results in greater demand from investors who hold currencies that have appreciated relative to the U.S. dollar.
The performance of gold bullion is often compared to stocks as different investment vehicles. Gold is regarded by some as a store of value (without growth) whereas stocks are regarded as a return on value (i.e., growth from anticipated real price increase plus dividends). Stocks and bonds perform best in a stable political climate with strong property rights and little turmoil. The attached graph shows the value of Dow Jones Industrial Average divided by the price of an ounce of gold. Since 1800, stocks have consistently gained value in comparison to gold in part because of the stability of the American political system. This appreciation has been cyclical with long periods of stock outperformance followed by long periods of gold outperformance. The Dow Industrials bottomed out a ratio of 1:1 with gold during 1980 (the end of the 1970s bear market) and proceeded to post gains throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The gold price peak of 1980 also coincided with the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan and the threat of the global expansion of communism. The ratio peaked on January 14, 2000 a value of 41.3 and has fallen sharply since.
Unlike most paper assets, gold held in physical form – pure gold bullion, and gold bullion coins produced by government mints – carries no counter-party risk. As such, when you hold physical gold you are not dependent on anyone’s managerial performance such as in stocks, bonds and managed accounts. The value of your gold simply reflects world prices with you as the sole decision maker on if and when to buy and sell. Historically gold prices are less volatile than those of other precious metals and can serve as an excellent candidate for long-term investment.
Second, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) only allows for one tax-free rollover of IRA funds each year and this rollover of the full amount of funds must occur within 60 days of removing the funds from your current IRA custodian's care to avoid penalty. If you choose a custodian that you want to change later, you will have to wait the full 12 months or face tax penalties on the money you are moving.
As with any commodity worthy of investment, there has been a lot of change to Gold prices in the last 5 years. Periods of strength in the U.S. economy have led to lower prices from time to time. Comparatively, periods of volatility in the stock market and other sectors have given power to the price of Gold. When investing in Gold, it is essential to watch the market trends closely, going at least 5 years back to research. This will give a broader picture of what to expect, and give you the chance to determine whether you are buying on an upward climb or a downward slide. All investors must keep in mind that Gold prices will change many times over the course of a 5 year period, but doing the research enables wise investing. Even during weeks or months when Gold prices have experienced a rise, watching the trend will help you decide whether to hold onto your Precious Metals or sell them.

The gold that miners dig up goes into a number of different industries today. The largest by far is jewelry, which accounts for around 50% of gold demand. Another 40% comes from direct physical investment in gold, including gold used to create coins, bullion, medals, and gold bars. This broad demand category includes individuals, central banks, and, more recently, exchange-traded funds that purchase gold on behalf of others. The remaining demand for gold comes from industry, for use in things such as dentistry, heat shields, and tech gadgets.

Franco-Nevada has consistently beaten EPS estimates over the past five quarters. The stock is currently trading at $67.19, so there is some room for growth into its average 12-month price target of $81.27, and the dividend yield of 1.45% could be attractive to some investors. Furthermore, there is a chance that the stock could exceed expectations as the company's diversification efforts begin to bear fruit.
