At the center of everything we do is a strong commitment to independent research and sharing its profitable discoveries with investors. This dedication to giving investors a trading advantage led to the creation of our proven Zacks Rank stock-rating system. Since 1986 it has nearly tripled the S&P 500 with an average gain of +26% per year. These returns cover a period from 1986-2011 and were examined and attested by Baker Tilly, an independent accounting firm.

Investors and experts have often recommend that 10% to 20% of an investor’s assets should be invested in precious metals but the reasons for investing don’t stop there. Throughout history, precious metals, including gold, have been a solid hedge against a declining U.S. dollar. Along with this comes the security which gold has to offer during times of war, political strife and uncertainty. Simply look to 2009, though a recession occurred, gold experienced a 25% increase. This safe-haven investment could also offer outstanding price appreciation and profit.
Our clients value their retirement, commonly referred to as their "golden years," and strive to protect their funds from future economic crisis; therefore, many are now depending on a Gold and/or Silver individual retirement account. Traditional individual retirement accounts rely largely on select stocks, bond and/or mutual funds for their worth but, since these funds are closely interconnected with the economy, the value of individual retirement accounts could potentially drop when the economy is in crisis. Retirees don’t want their retirement funds diminishing along with the economy! Banks and the government are often less influential on the value and performance of gold and other precious metals; so many clients are interested in utilizing their current individual retirement account for a silver or gold IRA rollover. In fact, many analysts believe gold and silver are set to increase in worth, even during uncertain economic times. Lear Capital can help you today with your gold and/or silver IRA rollover.
Gold IRAs are normally defined as “alternative investments,” which means they are not traded on a public exchange and require special expertise to value. While gold has the potential of a high return, it’s easy to be blinded by its glitter. Gold can be volatile (see When And Why Do Gold Prices Plummet?). When gold is rising, you also have to decide whether you'd be buying at – or close to – the top of the market if you invest at that point. Waiting could make more sense.
Gold bullion must be purchased from dealers, who often add premiums to their prices. It must be stored, safeguarded and insured, creating additional costs. Since gold bullion is a commodity, its value is in its rarity, with prices fluctuating by supply and demand rules. The mining companies backing up gold stocks also have operating costs for personnel, equipment and all phases of finding, digging and transporting gold. Should these operating costs, such as the cost of fuel, rise, their profitability declines, as with any corporation facing such increases. Their stock values depend on company profitability and projections of future successes.

Morris & Watson aims to provide as much information as possible to investors in Gold & Silver. Many ask for tips to successful investing in Gold & Silver or how to invest in Gold & Silver, so here is some helpful tips supplied by Adam Van Sambeek, Treasury Manager at Morris & Watson, Auckland, with over 17 years experience in Financial Markets and Commodity trading.
Many investors spend time deciding whether to buy gold or buy silver, however the savviest investors own both. Whereas gold could offer the ultimate insurance and protection against uncertain economic times, silver is a more speculative investment. Despite gold and silver both being commonly invested precious metals, silver is an entirely different investment which can realise substantial profits despite the initial VAT outlay. It’s because of these differences that owning both gold and silver together can be of benefit.
A. Because of the annual fees for storage, insurance and management fees (approx. $225/year), precious metals IRAs are most economical when their value is higher, and that is where a rollover makes a great deal of sense.  Someone just starting an IRA, even with maximum yearly contributions, would need a few years to accumulate a large enough account to make a self-directed plan cost effective.

I can’t say I blame investors for not seeing the light. Yamana’s COGS are out of control, putting the company in a bad position before it gets to the middle of the income statement. The bottom line has improved significantly in recent years, but its still mired in red ink. Capex also ballooned last year, and free cash flow is negative over the past five quarters.

Exchange-traded funds. If you don't particularly care about holding the gold you own but want direct exposure to the physical metal, then an exchange-traded fund like SPDR Gold Shares is probably the way to go. This fund directly purchases gold on behalf of its shareholders. You'll likely have to pay a commission to trade an ETF, and there will be a management fee (SPDR Gold Share's expense ratio is 0.40%), but you'll benefit from a liquid investment that invests directly in gold coins, bullion, and bars. That said, not all gold-related ETFs invest directly in gold, as I'll discuss below.
It’s hard for people to accept that gold is not a good investment. Thousands of years of human culture certifies gold as wealth, as a currency that survives all the vicissitudes of history and economics, and not without reason. Gold is a kind of social construct— it has value because everyone thinks it has value. Pointing out that such a belief is irrational or that its rate of return is poor is not going to make a big dent in such beliefs. Still, it’s something worth being aware of, and hopefully thinking about.
After that, investors are often attracted to gold miners like industry giants Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX), Goldcorp, and Newmont Mining. The shares of gold miners usually track the price of the metal and they can invest in their assets to increase production over time. The shares of miners, however, come with additional risks. For example, many miners are focused on gold, but that's not the only metal they produce. Barrick gets around 90% of its revenue from gold; the rest comes from copper and other sources -- it's not exactly a pure play.
Research is everything. Your decision to buy gold online wouldn’t have been taken lightly and should be backed by your own research. Much the same, when it comes to selecting your chosen bullion dealer, again research is vital. The Internet is the best place to conduct your research. The Internet holds information about the impartial experiences, opinions and recommendations of millions of people all around the world. It sounds obvious, but why not start your research by simply typing in the bullion dealers brand name into Google. The Internet really is the world's largest open forum in which companies have no control. It will become quickly apparent if a bullion dealer has a negative online reputation, in which case they should be avoided at all costs.
Whether you choose to have your metal delivered to your home, or to keep it stored with your depository custodian's vault, it is up to you. By storing it at a depository vault, you gain the comfort and satisfaction of knowing that your investment is safely guarded according to depository industry standards. Stored metal provides you with the benefit of being able to liquidate your investment quicker. You may direct Monex to ship you your metal, at any time.
Gold has been used as a form of money for thousands of years. Because of gold's luster, rarity, and its uncommon density (no other precious metal outside the platinum group is as heavy); it became the medium for trading. Gold also inspired the concept of money: compact, confidential, and changeless. Throughout the thousands of years that have passed, gold has only become more favored over other means of currency.

A Gold IRA is an Individual Retirement Account that allows investors to hold hard, physical assets in their retirement portfolios. Typically, both traditional and Roth IRAs can hold only cash, bonds, and stock. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 broadened the types of investments allowed in individual retirement accounts to include certain types of precious metals. These IRAs are called “self-directed” or “alternative-asset” IRAs. Not all precious metals are allowed. Usually, they are limited to gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
Gold mining stocks. One major issue with a direct investment in gold is that there's no growth potential. An ounce of gold today will be the same ounce of gold 100 years from now. That's one of the key reasons famed investor Warren Buffett doesn't like gold -- it is, essentially, an unproductive asset. He prefers to own investments that are "procreative," meaning they produce an income stream of some sort.
Like most commodities, the price of gold is driven by supply and demand, including speculative demand. However, unlike most other commodities, saving and disposal play larger roles in affecting its price than its consumption. Most of the gold ever mined still exists in accessible form, such as bullion and mass-produced jewelry, with little value over its fine weight — so it is nearly as liquid as bullion, and can come back onto the gold market.[12][13] At the end of 2006, it was estimated that all the gold ever mined totalled 158,000 tonnes (156,000 long tons; 174,000 short tons).[14] The investor Warren Buffett has said that the total amount of gold in the world that is above ground could fit into a cube with sides of just 20 metres (66 ft)[15] (which is roughly consistent with 158,000 tonnes based on a specific gravity of 19.3). However, estimates for the amount of gold that exists today vary significantly and some have suggested the cube could be a lot smaller or larger.[by whom?]
There are several reasons to buy silver. The precious metal is used as an investment, as a hedge against inflation, and survival purposes in extremely dire situations. Junk silver has long been considered the optimal barter currency when our society breaks down but silver rounds should also be included in a portfolio for bartering. An advantage the rounds have over junk silver is that they have their weight and purity stamped on the actual coins. Silver has a much lower price than gold and is a more attainable investment and hedge against inflation for most people. There are many industrial and medical applications for silver because it is electronically conducive, thermally, conductive, and reflective. Products like cellphones, cameras, and laptops all contain silver creating a strong demand for silver.

Since its discovery, the precious metal gold has never ceased to fascinate. Initially used heavily in pieces of jewelry and currency, today it can be found in a number of other various industries due to its impressive conductivity and malleability. Though currently it's not often found in circulated pieces of currency, the precious metal is still widely collected across the world by civilians and governments alike. While gold coins or rounds are still popular, frequently gold is stockpiled in bar form due to a number of factors like the number of available sizes and how easy it is to track, stack, and store. Here at the U.S. Gold Bureau, we take a lot of pride in the wide variety of gold we offer. This is especially true when it comes to our stock of gold bars. Ranging in size from 1 ounce bars to 100 gram bars, you should be able to find whatever sized ingot you're looking for. What's more, we carry bars from a number of different refiners and manufacturers. Get bars made by International Trade Bullion or take a look at package deals that contain gold bullion from a number of different refineries like RMC, Perth Mint, and PAMP.
Investments in either gold or silver are completely reliant on the customer’s preferences. The important thing behind deciding what to invest in is to ensure you are informed in the metals markets. Our website offers amazing resources to help you decide which investment is right for you. To understand more about why you should invest in gold, silver, palladium or platinum, visit the page on “Why Silver” and also take advantage of Monex' proprietary “Market Outlook” which contains reports analyzing each of the four precious metals.
The tax implications for withdrawing your funds before reaching the retirement age are different. On premature withdrawal, one will be required to pay an additional 10 percent penalty tax on the amount they withdraw. However, there are certain exceptions such as disability, death, expense for higher education, etc. The IRS offers tax relaxation to individuals whose medical expenses exceed 10 percent of their income. The IRS also allows first time homebuyers to withdraw up to $10,000 from their IRA without paying any kind of taxes.
You can even find gold bars that were refined by the Republic Metals Corporation. Most gold buffs will recognize this refinery as RMC. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, this group has grown to become of the world's primary precious metal refineries. In fact, their modern, state-of-the-art refinery has a refining capacity of upwards of 7,000 combined tons of silver and gold; and it's right here in the United States. We also carry gold bars Credit Suisse, the official bank of Switzerland. Since Credit Suisse Bank is one of the most trusted and secure banks in the world, you can be sure that bars from the Swiss bank are especially popular among sage investors who want to make sure they're purchasing quality metal. When the sheer number of variations is taken into account in terms of gold fineness, weight, and size, it's no wonder that the manufacturing of the gold bar itself is so important to the informed investor.
We'll cover many of the opportunities for investing in gold, including bullion (i.e. gold bars), mutual funds, futures, mining companies, and jewelry. With few exceptions, only bullion, futures, and a handful of specialty funds provide a direct investment opportunity in gold. Other investments derive part of their value from other sources. If you’re investing in gold, remember that it’s a commodity, and it’s up to you to make sure you’re not overpaying. The day you buy, check the spot price of gold (available at many Web sites, such as www.goldprice.org). Don’t pay more than a 5% to 8% markup over the spot price -- that’s the typical premium, according to Michael White, spokesman for the U.S. Mint.
For many investors, there’s something magical and intriguing about silver and gold. Perhaps it’s because these precious metals have spurred the interest of explorers and adventurers across the globe for centuries — or maybe it’s the potential to reap significant profits. But before you invest, separate fact from fiction by learning the biggest marketplace myths about investing in gold and silver.

Above details my point on large gold producers relative performance against the spot price of gold. Since the beginning of 2007, gold gained roughly 166% with the entire field of the aforementioned gold producers lagging behind in shareholder value. Large gold producers as a whole lack the organic growth necessary to deliver substantial gains relative to gold’s spot price, and, I believe, the real value lies in junior mining companies. The interview on gold stocks discusses more of this on the homepage.
