Our story starts with the discovery of gold deposits in Nubia. These discoveries fed the Egyptian Pharaohs and their courts with gold for jewelry, which we are still marveling at – over 3,000 years later. Taking a development of the first silver bartering tokens invented by King Pheidon of Argos around 700 BC – the Lydians , under their King Croesus then used gold to mint what we know as coins in the Middle East. Coins could be used to buy goods and services. Portable, easily recognized, and with an exact value. They were perfect for trading. So successful was his invention, Croesus is associated with expressions describing the wealthy, even today. The Romans and Greeks improved on this system of payment, and with their hoards of coinage ran Empires, conquering a large part of the globe. The Conquistadors of Spain then discovered vast troves of Inca and Aztec treasure in South America and transported it back to Europe by galleon in the Middle Ages. Gold was traded, stolen by pirates and thieves, and used by Governments and Kingdoms both legally and illegally, to fight regional wars and expand Empires across the world. So astonishingly valuable was the Spaniard’s stolen fortune, adventurers still scour the globe for sunken ships laden with doubloons and golden jewelry. They spend millions of dollars on speculative explorations to recover the treasure, using the most modern recovery techniques. Throughout this period, gold’s value as a basis for the wealth of nations was established. Those with vast gold reserves were always the “players” on the world stage. It was this gold which gave them the money needed to back up their expansion across continents. In more recent times, after America was “discovered” and settled, one of the most fascinating and incredible stories in the modern era of gold happened. The outcome of this tale founded a State, a major city and more. It is also the reason you may well have a stake in the adventures and explorations of your ancestors, even today! Back in the spring and summer of 1848 – James Marshall discovered gold in The American River at Coloma, California, just north of Sacramento. Word spread and in the fall people came flocking to the area looking to seek their fortunes. By 1849, the first of 300,000 prospectors were staking their claims and panned in the rivers and streams for the placer gold which laced rivers and streams in the hills and valleys of the Sierra Nevada. These prospectors faced hardships which are unimaginable today. They became known collectively as “forty-niners”, due to the year in which most of them struck out to search for the gold. Many died and most of those who made it through disease, sickness, starvation and crime, returned broken and worse off financially than if they had never left their homes! At first the pickings were easy, there was surface gold all over the territory. Many of the original prospectors did strike it rich. An estimated tens of billions of dollars in today’s prices of gold was found and extracted. Once the surface gold was taken – the only way to reach further lodes and veins was not only to dig and create small mines, but also to use newly designed extraction and refining techniques. This needed more men and equipment – and more money. San Francisco became the port for shipping the gold and for bringing in the gear to mine it. A settlement of just a few hundred people when the gold rush began, became an important hub of almost 40,000 people by 1852. This grew to 150,000 by 1870.
The cash costs of the company are expected to reduce and the company will probably attain better margins for every ounce of the gold mined. The investors are focusing on this stock for getting the higher ROI. The company even pays off a dividend. Yamana Gold is the biggest bargain of the stocks and has a long-term chance for growth. The investors can gain higher potentials by buying at the right price.
The main problems with gold bullion are that the storage and insurance costs, and the relatively large markup from the dealer both hinder profit potential. Also, buying gold bullion is a direct investment in gold's value, and each dollar change in the price of gold will proportionally change the value of one's holdings. Other gold investments, such as mutual funds, may be made in smaller dollar amounts than bullion, and also may not have as much direct price exposure as bullion does.
You can choose to transfer your entire individual retirement account, or any portion of it, into a new Self-Directed Gold / Silver IRA. This common practice is known as a “Direct Transfer”. The Direct Transfer is a tax-free and penalty-free transaction, since you are simply moving funds from one IRA custodian to another custodian. In some cases, you can also rollover your IRA or 401(K) and redeposit the funds into the new IRA account within 60 days. You may roll over the same money once every 12 months to preserve the tax-deferred status of your retirement savings.
Buying jewelry at retail prices involves a substantial markup – up to 400% over the underlying value of the gold. Better jewelry bargains may be found at estate sales and auctions. The advantage of buying jewelry this way is that there is no retail markup; the disadvantage is the time spent searching for valuable pieces. Nonetheless, jewelry ownership provides the most enjoyable way to own gold, even if it is not the most profitable from an investment standpoint. As an art form, gold jewelry is beautiful. As an investment, it is mediocre – unless you are the jeweler.
The reputable Gold IRA custodian you chose will be able to furnish you with all of the necessary paperwork and contact information needed to arrange your IRA rollover. Having this paperwork handled prior to the rollover date ensures that the money will be successfully transferred to the Gold IRA account within the IRS's required 60 day period. In some cases, your existing IRA custodian may choose to issue you a check for the full amount of your IRA and then you will have to arrange deposit of the full amount of these funds with the new Gold IRA custodian. There may be fees associated with the rollover of your current IRA and these should be discussed with your IRA custodian prior to making any decisions.
3- Future Profit: if, like some high net worth investors, you strongly believe that the price of gold will reach $5,000 or more per ounce in the next few years, then allocating more than 20% of your portfolio could generate substantial profits in the coming years. This is not a position we recommend here at Gold IRA Guide simply because of the high risk involved. Beginner and intermediate investors should “play it safe” by going for a lower allocation, and adjust accordingly if they feel confident and comfortable with their investment afterwards.

As with any commodity worthy of investment, there has been a lot of change to Gold prices in the last 5 years. Periods of strength in the U.S. economy have led to lower prices from time to time. Comparatively, periods of volatility in the stock market and other sectors have given power to the price of Gold. When investing in Gold, it is essential to watch the market trends closely, going at least 5 years back to research. This will give a broader picture of what to expect, and give you the chance to determine whether you are buying on an upward climb or a downward slide. All investors must keep in mind that Gold prices will change many times over the course of a 5 year period, but doing the research enables wise investing. Even during weeks or months when Gold prices have experienced a rise, watching the trend will help you decide whether to hold onto your Precious Metals or sell them.

Over the years, Gold price history has shown that the global economic climate primarily determines the value. When the largest economies in the world, including the United States, are experiencing growth, demand for Gold goes down as investors are more willing to try riskier options such as the stock market. When leading countries suffer a recession, the demand for Gold goes back up due to its historic role as a safe haven investment. As seen many times in the history of Gold, prices will once again go up. This relationship between historical rates and the current value of Gold has been viewed many times over the years and is a central determining factor used by market analysts.

A gold coin is made predominantly of gold. Bullion coins are used for investment purposes. Other gold coins for sale are meant to be sold to collectors. Bullion coins are valued based on the gold content while collectible coins may have numismatic value.  (However, be careful, as many items sold as rare or collectible are worth no more than their actual melt value.)
The final type of gold that is popularly invested in is gold bars. Bars are perhaps the most popular and come in a variety of different sizes. Unlike coins they can be produced by private mints, and unlike rounds their designs are often simple and plain. The variety of sizes of gold bars is far greater than any other type of gold, part of the reason why they are so extremely popular.
As cycles investors, we know there will come a day when, as the cycles determine, it will be time for us to transition out of our gold and silver holdings and move into other asset classes (such as real estate or high dividend-yielding stocks). When we measure the end of this gold and silver cycle, we will be sharing our Exit Strategy communications with our GoldSilver Insiders.
In order to fully understand the purpose of gold, one must look back to the start of the gold market. While gold's history began in 3000 B.C, when the ancient Egyptians started forming jewelry, it wasn't until 560 B.C. that gold started to act as a currency. At that time, merchants wanted to create a standardized and easily transferable form of money that would simplify trade. The creation of a gold coin stamped with a seal seemed to be the answer, as gold jewelry was already widely accepted and recognized throughout various corners of the earth.
Local coin and bullion shops may carry various types of bullion bar and coin as well as numismatics and collectibles. Such shops may, however, carry smaller inventories and charge higher premiums compared to online dealers. This makes sense, after all, given the fact the brick and mortar coin shops tend to have higher operating costs compared to online dealers.
Our clients value their retirement, commonly referred to as their "golden years," and strive to protect their funds from future economic crisis; therefore, many are now depending on a Gold and/or Silver individual retirement account. Traditional individual retirement accounts rely largely on select stocks, bond and/or mutual funds for their worth but, since these funds are closely interconnected with the economy, the value of individual retirement accounts could potentially drop when the economy is in crisis. Retirees don’t want their retirement funds diminishing along with the economy! Banks and the government are often less influential on the value and performance of gold and other precious metals; so many clients are interested in utilizing their current individual retirement account for a silver or gold IRA rollover. In fact, many analysts believe gold and silver are set to increase in worth, even during uncertain economic times. Lear Capital can help you today with your gold and/or silver IRA rollover.
A Gold IRA is an Individual Retirement Account that allows investors to hold hard, physical assets in their retirement portfolios. Typically, both traditional and Roth IRAs can hold only cash, bonds, and stock. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 broadened the types of investments allowed in individual retirement accounts to include certain types of precious metals. These IRAs are called “self-directed” or “alternative-asset” IRAs. Not all precious metals are allowed. Usually, they are limited to gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
A gold IRA is a specie (pun intended) of Investment Retirement Account (IRA) that allows the investor to own physical gold, silver, platinum and palladium, instead of the usual assets (like cash, stocks and bonds) that regular IRAs are limited to. It was created by Congress in 1997, says Edmund C. Moy, chief strategist for Fortress Gold and who, as former United States Mint director, oversaw the largest production of gold and silver coins in the world.

One approach to deciding how much of a diversified portfolio should be allocated to gold is to measure the percentage of worldwide financial assets that bullion represents. According to the World Gold Council, the total value of all the gold that has ever been mined is around $7.5 trillion. That’s about 4% of the combined value of the global stock, bond and gold markets.

Gold certificates. Gold certificates are another option for "owning" gold that is best placed in the bullion category but merits a little explanation. Gold certificates are notes issued by a company that owns gold. Effectively, the note provides the buyer with direct exposure to the metal, but it doesn't require the physical ownership of the metal, which the note issuer keeps safely under lock and key.
The 2008 Crisis was a big wake up call for many American investors. Real Estate prices dropped overnight. Stocks & bonds became highly unpredictable. Major currencies like the US dollar and Euro also went on a downhill path. Virtually every other type of traditional investment was no longer trustworthy. Banks and governments themselves have been looking for ways to hedge against market volatily, and precious metals such as gold and silver turned out to be the best option.
With a transfer, you don’t have to do anything. A transfer involves moving the assets directly from one custodian to another custodian without you taking receipt of the funds. Our team will work with New Direction IRA, your self-directed IRA custodian to get your funds moved over quickly. Typically, it takes between 3-7 days to move your funds from your old custodian to your new custodian. Once the funds are moved over they will put the funds into a FDIC money market account and your account representative will call you.
The impact of the gold rush in California, America and on the wider world, cannot be overstated. Globally, one of the most interesting examples of this effect is of France. It is estimated that US$80 million of gold from California ended up there. In the years following the gold rush, this level of gain was echoed throughout other countries of the world.
The LBMA "traceable chain of custody" includes refiners as well as vaults. Both have to meet their strict guidelines. Bullion products from these trusted refiners are traded at face value by LBMA members without assay testing. By buying bullion from an LBMA member dealer and storing it in an LBMA recognized vault, customers avoid the need of re-assaying or the inconvenience in time and expense it would cost.[40] However this is not 100% sure, for example, Venezuela moved its gold because of the political risk for them, and as the past shows, even in countries considered as democratic and stable, for example in the USA in the 1930s gold was seized by the government and legal moving was banned.[41]

Then you have to do something with the gold you've purchased. That could mean tossing it in a drawer, buying a safe, or renting a safe deposit box from the local bank. Depending on your selection, you could end up paying an ongoing cost for storing your gold. Selling, meanwhile, can be difficult since you have to retrieve your gold and bring it to a dealer, who may offer you a price that's below the current spot price -- effectively a markup in the opposite direction.

These coins come in fractions of an ounce, such has a half-ounce, a quarter-ounce and even one-twentieth of an ounce. You’ll pay a higher markup for such coins than for one-ounce coins. The only real reason to own them is if you believe in a future meltdown of society, at which point paper money will be worthless and you’ll need small (gold) change to buy, say, ammo, freeze-dried food or a latte.
Gold IRAs are normally defined as “alternative investments,” which means they are not traded on a public exchange and require special expertise to value. While gold has the potential of a high return, it’s easy to be blinded by its glitter. Gold can be volatile (see When And Why Do Gold Prices Plummet?). When gold is rising, you also have to decide whether you'd be buying at – or close to – the top of the market if you invest at that point. Waiting could make more sense.

We'll cover many of the opportunities for investing in gold, including bullion (i.e. gold bars), mutual funds, futures, mining companies, and jewelry. With few exceptions, only bullion, futures, and a handful of specialty funds provide a direct investment opportunity in gold. Other investments derive part of their value from other sources. (For background reading, see Does It Still Pay To Invest In Gold?)
The price of gold fluctuates constantly in the markets. This can make pricing somewhat challenging for many dealers. But we’ve created a program that updates the prices of our products in real time in accordance with the spot price of gold at the time of purchase. We also have a price match guarantee to match the advertised price of any of our products on the sites of our top competitors.
We can definitely help international buyers protect their futures with gold and silver. We will gladly facilitate the purchase and storage of precious metals for international buyers, but we only ship and store the metals in our secure and insured vaults in the USA (Delaware) and Canada (Mississauga, ON). No matter where you are in the world, our Buyback program is a safe way to liquidate your holdings once it’s time to cash out. We offer our Noble Ambassador Survival Pack for offshore clients – those outside the United States – who want to hold precious metals within North America.

“The problem with gold,” says Koesterich, “is that there’s no logical reason why this shiny metal should be a store of value — except that everyone has sort of agreed for thousands of years that it is.” That’s why you still see investors flock to gold in a crisis, as they did one day in mid-May when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 372 points in a single day, while gold prices spiked by nearly 2%.

In previous years, increased wealth of emerging market economies boosted demand for gold. In many of these countries, gold is intertwined into the culture. India is one of the largest gold-consuming nations in the world; it has many uses there, including jewelry. As such, the Indian wedding season in October is traditionally the time of the year that sees the highest global demand for gold (though it has taken a tumble in 2012.) In China, where gold bars are a traditional form of saving, the demand for gold has been steadfast.
The statements made on this website are opinions and past performance is no indication of future performance or returns. Precious metals, like all investments, carry risk. Precious metals and coins may appreciate, depreciate, or stay the same depending on a variety of factors. Lear Capital, Inc. cannot guarantee, and makes no representation, that any metals purchased will appreciate at all or appreciate sufficiently to make customers a profit. The decision to purchase or sell precious metals, and which precious metals to purchase or sell, are the customer’s decision alone, and purchases and sales should be made subject to the customer’s own research, prudence and judgment.
If you are new to investing in gold it is a good idea to go with a company that will be willing to walk you through the process. Many gold investment companies will simply expect to take your order and handle the funds transfer and gold delivery. This is not helpful if you are not sure of what the best way to invest your gold is or even how much of your IRA you want to put towards gold.
A Gold IRA rollover provides the perfect vehicle to transition into the safety and security of gold and other IRA-approved precious metals. Gold has been utilized and accepted as global currency for millennia. Actually, history shows that the first gold coins were struck in Lydia, a region of western Turkey today, around 600 BC. However, “unnatural” collections of gold flakes have been found in Paleolithic caves dating as far back as 40,000 BC. Gold in particular, has been so highly regarded, that its discovery or presence has literally caused the altering or in some cases the destruction of entire civilizations.

Although governments have decided it's easier to be off the gold standard than on it, that doesn't change the central issue that backs gold's intrinsic value and safe-haven status: There's only so much gold in the world. The gold that's above ground being used in some fashion is estimated to be around 190,000 metric tons. The amount of gold in the ground that can be economically mined today is notably less, at roughly 54,000 metric tons.

Although central banks do not generally announce gold purchases in advance, some, such as Russia, have expressed interest in growing their gold reserves again as of late 2005.[22] In early 2006, China, which only holds 1.3% of its reserves in gold,[23] announced that it was looking for ways to improve the returns on its official reserves. Some bulls hope that this signals that China might reposition more of its holdings into gold, in line with other central banks. Chinese investors began pursuing investment in gold as an alternative to investment in the Euro after the beginning of the Eurozone crisis in 2011. China has since become the world’s top gold consumer as of 2013.[24]
The real problem: Futures contracts are usually bought with only a small fraction of the total contract cost. For example, an investor might only have to put down 20% of the full cost of the gold controlled by the contract. This creates leverage, which increases an investor's potential gains -- and losses. And since contracts have specific end dates, you can't simply hold on to a losing position and hope it rebounds. Futures contracts are a complex and time-consuming way to invest in gold that can materially amplify gains and losses. Although it's good to know that futures contracts exist, they are high-risk and not recommended for beginners.
These ads and others like them often include an appeal to put your retirement savings into a precious metals Individual Retirement Account (IRA) either to make your money safer or help it grow faster. There’s generally no minimum investment and the advertiser shows you how to open the account and roll your existing IRA or 401(k) into it. The company then helps you convert that cash into precious metals by selling you gold or silver coins or bullion bars.
Industrial, dental and medical uses account for around 12% of gold demand. Gold has high thermal and electrical conductivity properties, along with a high resistance to corrosion and bacterial colonization. Jewelry and industrial demand have fluctuated over the past few years due to the steady expansion in emerging markets of middle classes aspiring to Western lifestyles, offset by the financial crisis of 2007–2010.[35]
A Gold IRA (or Precious Metals IRA) is a self-directed Individual Retirement Account that has become incredibly popular in recent years, particularly among those who value diversity and stability in their investment portfolio. A Gold IRA gives investors the ability to add physical precious metals, in the form of coins and bars, to their tax-sheltered retirement accounts. Precious metals, which have long been considered a classic hedge against inflation and geopolitical crisis, are ideally suited to create diversification away from paper assets for the long term investor.

Precious metals investments have always been the target of counterfitters looking to make a quick buck. To battle this issue, many mints implement unique markers and counterfeit-proof measures, like Sunshine Minting’s Mint Mark SI™ feature and the micro-graving done by the Royal Canadian Mint. As the counterfeiting is punishable by law and usually carries a heavy prison sentence and fines, legal tender coins are considered a comparatively safer option as their legal tender status acts as a successful deterrent in most cases.
Goldline recommends reviewing its Account Agreement, State Addendum and risk disclosure booklet, Coin Facts for Investors and Collectors to Consider, prior to making your purchase. Precious metals and rare coins can increase or decrease in value. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. We believe that precious metals are a long term investment, recognizing any specific holding period may be affected by current market conditions requiring a longer or shorter holding period.
To address that concern, a few alternative IRA advisers point to a wrinkle in the tax code that they say could let you store your precious metals nearby — such as in a local bank safe deposit box or at home. Essentially, the company helps you set up what’s called a limited liability company (LLC) and place that company into a self-directed IRA. The LLC then buys the gold and chooses where to store it.
If you already have an IRA or 401(k), either regular or Roth, you have the option of rolling over some or all of its funds into a gold IRA. The rollover process is the same as for any other retirement fund. You typically fill out an account application (whether online or on paper), and the account is usually established within 24 to 48 hours of completion and receipt of the application.
Made possible by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, a gold IRA is a type of long-term retirement account in which a custodian holds precious metals for the account owner. Although gold IRA is the most common name, that doesn’t mean you can only purchase gold with the plan. You can also hold certain types of silver, platinum and palladium. Gold IRA plans are typically self-directed IRAs, which allow more diverse investments than a traditional IRA.

During his tenure as director of the Mint, Moy says there was little demand for gold IRAs because they involve a very complicated transaction that only the most persistent investor was willing to pursue. “You must find a trustee or custodian for the IRA along with an approved depository. Then, you need to buy the approved gold or other precious metal and have it transferred to the depository in a way the custodian can account for it,” he explains.
As an asset class, precious metals (such as a Gold IRA), offer a number of benefits over other common investment choices. Gold’s benefits include a history of financial stability during economic downturns, better insulation from currency devaluations, and a fixed supply that can’t be changed in the foreseeable future. Read below for more information about how gold compares to some other popular investment classes.
Additionally, Gold is recognized the world over as carrying intrinsic value. If you wish to sell or trade your Gold in the future, you know there will always be a market for it. If you wish to endow your loved ones with a tangible inheritance, you know that Gold will only be more valuable in another lifetime. You might buy physical Gold for any or all of these reasons.
Rounds, like bars, are produced by a number of different mints and can also be found close to spot value like bars. The thing about rounds, however, is that they are sometimes harder to find depending on the issue and edition you are looking for. Because they are sometimes made in collector’s additions, certain rounds have their prices artificially inflated by high demand and things of that nature. This is not common, though it does happen.
Gold sellers will often market gold IRAs by contrasting them with the volatility and risk of the stock market. What’s more, gold will undoubtedly always have some value to it. However, it’s important to remember that there’s no such thing as a risk-free investment. The price of gold is subject to its own rise and fall. Investing in physical assets also presents the possibility of theft, although most custodians will insure against that scenario.
Rather than being miners, they are more like specialty finance companies that get paid in precious metals. The low prices they pay help to lock in wide margins regardless of the price of gold, and their investment approaches all result in wider mine diversification than you would likely get from owning a single miner. And all three of these companies have reliably paid dividends for years, which can help investors to stick around through the entire commodity cycle to achieve the full diversification benefit gold can offer. Streaming companies are probably the best all-around option if you are looking to buy gold, providing diversification, direct exposure to gold, and upside potential from the gold projects they back.
In line with our roller coaster economic history, the potential for global and domestic economic calamity at this time is once again near a high. Some people riding this bull market have now financially returned to where they were before the 2008 collapse. As positive as it may seem, the reality essentially translates into nine wasted investment years. People who were properly leveraged with physical precious metals at the same time fared very well.
Many individuals have old 401(k) accounts or other types of qualified retirement plans from previous employers such as a 403(b), 457(b), Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), annuities or pension plans. Our in-house Individual Retirement Account Processing Department can handle all of the details for you, which usually involves contacting the custodian of your plan and instructing them to release the funds directly into your new individual retirement account. To find out if your retirement account is eligible, call us today to speak with one of our specialists. They can assist you with any questions you have about starting your Gold or Silver Precious Metal individual retirement account.
Many gold brokers will tell you that gold is a better investment than stocks or bonds, but the historical record doesn’t bear that out. Although gold prices are subject to spikes when there are shocks in the economic system — such as major stock market selloffs or rapid jumps in inflation — over the long term, gold has been beaten significantly as an investment.
If you currently have an IRA, you can move some (or all) of it to your new self-directed Gold IRA using a process known as a direct transfer. Once you’ve made your decision to complete the transfer, one of our Precious Metals Specialists will expertly guide you through the process step-by-step, to make the transfer quick, easy, and ensure that your retirement account is fully compliant with federal regulations.
